Free as Birds parallels the journeys of birds and immigrants amid global deforestation and displacement. Through performative video, photography, and sonic vocal experimentation, the project imagines the artist as a bird crossing borders with wings crafted from fragmented maps of Asia and Europe.
Performed on a Finnish island, scenes include tracing water pathways, dancing with birds, and confronting a symbolic border. Sonic components incorporate field recordings and traditional folk songs about birds and migration, translated through AI language model and vocalizations inspired by birdsong and Finnish phonetics, as “new bird songs” that echoes the mechanical and repetitive efforts of learning new languages and adapt to new environment.
