Sonic Memory Decomposer

Composing with New Musical Instruments
Authors

Sonic Memory Decomposer is an experimental instrument composed of three ceramic-electronic vessels that collectively record and “decompose” sound. The first cup captures up to three sonic memories; the second contains light and moisture sensors that, along with the touch of the audience, modulate the loops; and the third vessel holds the soil whose changing conditions influence the system’s behavior. Using granular synthesis, pitch drift, layered looping, and delay, each recording slowly erodes and changes as time passes and new voices accumulate. Blending human voice, soil data, touch, and time, Sonic Memory Decomposer explores memories as organic matter—distributed, shaped by their environment, and always in the process of decay and transformation.
