New Media End of Semester Exhibition

Computational Art and Design Physical Computing

New Media MA students are dedicated to expanding the boundaries of traditional gallery settings. From captivating data visualization, interactive installations, to engaging artistic games, we invite you to transcend the ordinary and engage with art in fresh, physically enriching ways.

The exhibition highlights works from two different courses, Physical Computing and Computational Art and Design.

Computational Art and Design
#

This course introduces creative coding not just as a tool but also as a creative medium in itself. The course consists of joint lectures for all students and additional excercise groups that students choose based on their previous experience, skill level, and interests.

Physical Computing
#

This course introduces physical computing as a creative framework for investigating the connections between digital media and the physical world. Students explore electronics as a creative medium in the field of new media art and design through hands-on exercises and examples. The course covers some basic electronic concepts and theory, various analog circuits, prototyping your own circuits, microcontroller programming, working with sensors, using motors and other actuators, as well as using simple networking protocols.

Celeste Sanja Smareglia | lastBorn();
#

The theme of birth consistently appears in my dreams, serving as a symbolic announcement of the inception of a significant idea or the culmination of an enduring artistic process. LastBorn(); depicts a mechanised representation of rebirth, transformative pain and infusion of intimate materials that unfolds in every stage of the creative process.

The wearable breathing sensor functions as a primordial form of communication, a conduit for information and nourishment between the creator and their creation. This soft mechanical robot undergoes inflation with each inhale and deflation with each exhale mirroring the breath of its human counterpart. Much like the synchronisation of breaths in a maternal bond, a connection is established. As the lastborn inhales, it evolves into an autonomous entity.

Do you have what it takes to do BUSINESS? Pick up the phone and find out!

Jiayi Li | Cosmic Resonator
#

The artwork consists of a round xylophone with a built-in Arduino board to detect knocking signals and a digital rhythm game as the digital feedback and instrument guide. Originally inspired by the Himalayan singing bowl, the installation wants to create a harmonious and ethereal atmosphere by playing the instrument through the guide of the rhythm game.

The game is to control a particle to jump through a cosmic tunnel that consists of halos. If the player strikes the xylophone when the particle reaches the center of the halo, it will leap upward. If the player strikes around the xylophone, the particle releases a wave that triggers multiple halos to resonate and rise higher. The particle would evolve into different forms as it reaches a higher level. Are you able to launch it into the deep universe?

Lù Chén | Spill
#

sips tea Inspired by the Finnish folklore “harakointi” - the act of revealing a woman’s genitals to a target as supernatural magic to protect or curse, SPILL intends to spill the tea on a vaginal topic: menstruation. This kinetic installation demonstrates simplified menstrual cycles using teawares and a tampon. The mechanism is controlled by anonymous data on menstrual cycle lengths from a healthcare research project in 2012.

3:34 am
#

The tiles installation “3:34 am” consists of 60 tiles, each representing a single second in one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, that occurred in Chile in 2010.

The piece works as a data visualisation, showing the variation of displacement, velocity and acceleration of the earth, as recorded by the Chilean National Network of Accelerographs during the seism. Coded in Javascript and printed using a robotic arm.

As the earthquakes shake the ground and destroy our surroundings, the tiles are a symbol of collectivity and reconstruction that reminds us of the value of resilience.

Data source: RENADIC Universidad de Chile.

Logic of Connections
#

Logic of Connections is a series of seven interactive postcards displaying basic electronic circuits consisting of LED lights, switches and the seven types of logic gates. It is a convergence of rudimentary electronics and neo-brutalist graphic design, exploring the raw aesthetics of technology.

Each postcard explores a different logic gate and is wired out to draw parallels between the dual nature of electronics and the fluidity of human connections, where the binaries are oftentime restrictive and obsolete .

Sten Heijster | Tactile Dialogues
#

Tactile Dialogues is an ongoing research project about the physical interactions between people. The rug uses different materials with different textures that react to touch. The recordings you hear are fragments of conversations on the theme of touch. These conversations reveal cultural differences and the impact of politics on the way our bodies are arranged in space.

Volha Furs | Interactive Patterns
#

A carefully designed series of dynamic elements, created using the p5.js library. Utilising a MIDI controller, guests can explore an array of combinations involving shapes and colours that form diverse patterns. The MIDI sliders control various shapes, while the knobs alter colours for each distinct form. As the Christmas season approaches, this project evokes a festive and playful atmosphere, inspiring enjoyable and highly visual experiments.

Yihan Lou | Blossom to Soar - The plant and its free sprit
#

Blossom to Soar is an interactive installation with generative visuals, exploring the contrast between freedom and bondage, and the creativity of nature.

By picking up the flower pot and then tilting it, grow your digital butterfly orchid and release into the posture of flying butterflies, presenting a magical dance of digital and nature.
